Can You Crack It? That Overlooked Netherlands Creation Which Shaped our Contemporary Globe
There are many contenders to claim the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.
According to a new book, however, that title belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before automated cutting, building a simple merchant vessel required around 10 sawyers working over 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical amount of processed timber could be produced within a week.”
Owing to their rapid mechanical saw, which converted logs to boards using almost no manual labor, the Dutch could build vessels more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed a century of Dutch maritime, economic as well as cultural supremacy in the continent and the world.
The Original Genuine Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, was “mankind’s first true industrial machine.” A wind turbine turned a gear. One component transformed the circular motion to up-and-down motion for the saw. A separate mechanism transformed that same rotary motion into a lateral movement advancing the log toward the blade. A geared mechanism shifted the wood ahead a measured step per cycle.
“Each element seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts so they operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each downward stroke and moving with each upward stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent use of basic components.”
