Government Official Says MoD Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

An defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified matters in any vehicles.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that security is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Defence Context

The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to disable public transport and cause chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This broader defence situation highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government activities, including vehicle use to communication practices.
